Presented by Capital One Bank® and local partners, Getting Down to Business is a free business-training program to enhance the owners’ operational efficiency and capacity to grow their businesses through increased knowledge of best practices in the business world. GDTB has three components: 1) an in-class educational program,  2) savings account with a match and 3) mentorship/coaching, where each participant is paired with a mentor.

This is what one participant, David Yarborough of Dynamo Communications, said about mentoring:

I developed a village of SCORE advisors over the last year. My SCORE mentor for GDTB, Matt Fitzgerald, believed in my ability to succeed in business after I explained my background, experience and next steps to grow my marketing communications business. Prior to meeting with Matt for the 2016 GDTB classes, I met with Nick Tarte, who shared with the class that he sold his business for $50 million. He was very down-to-earth and equally unyielding about staying disciplined about sticking to your business plan and making necessary adjustments. He suggested that I talk with Raj Mashruwala, whom I met briefly at different times during the GDTB sessions, about developing legal agreements with clients and subcontractors. And there were others, like Judy Myers, Irwin Miller, Richard Trout and Rita Leader, who shared insights from their respective experiences in business. There were other SCORE advisors whose names escape me (forgive me), but the bottom line is that their knowledge was useful and affirmed for me that I did not have to reinvent the wheel or make mistakes that could have been avoided in the absence of their advice. I can honestly say, "Thanks, SCORE."
